10 simple exercises every cyclist needs for optimal fit and performance
Brendan Poh, owner of Cycle Craft in Parsippany NJ knows that even with the kind of premier bike fit he offers at Cycle Craft, he he can’t get you fully comfortable and powerful as a cyclist if you’re not strong and flexible.
Since Brendan has successfully worked with Dr. Mayes to recover from multiple injuries and address weaknesses, he wanted to share some of the exercises that have made the biggest impact on his cycling.
The video below demonstrates 10 simple exercises you can do at home with little or no equipment. These essential movements will get your core, glutes, hamstrings, back and hip complex in top shape so you feel good in the saddle and can be more effective on your bicycle.
These exercises are specifically designed to maximize pulling power, pedal stroke strength, back health, hip opening, lateral strength (since cycling is a linear sport) and injury prevention. Modifications are demonstrated for every athlete to progress at their own level.
If you spend just 5 minutes a day on a few of these exercises it will have a BIG impact.
Coming back from injury with physical therapy
Brendan from Cycle Craft also conducted an in-depth interview with Dr. Mayes to dig into every aspect of using physical therapy to become stronger in body, mind and spirit.
Whether it was rehabbing from surgery, doing preventative maintenance as an athlete or recovering from an accident, Brendan found that having a good PT made what felt impossible at first to be achievable by getting the tools and guidance to succeed.
He wanted to share his story to let other cyclists, athletes and everyday folks know that healing and thriving is possible!
