We’re Geno & Meri — and This Is Iron PT

Founders, Meri & Geno Mayes

It was 2009, but I remember like it was yesterday. My wife, Meri, and I were sitting in a fancy ballroom filled with several hundred other employees from the large physical therapy company where I’d worked since graduating as a Doctor of Physical Therapy.

We’d all been buzzing for weeks about the awards ceremony and I expected to hear stories of patients’ breakthroughs or front desk teams who built incredible relationships.

Instead, the first award went to the clinic with the fewest cancellations. The second, to the clinic with the most visits per patient. Statistic after statistic. Not one mention of the human side of care.

It was at that moment I realized that I was in the wrong place.

When I began researching, I discovered that “factory-style” care had become the norm in our industry and that wasn’t good enough. Not for me, and not for patients.

So in 2011, with our two young daughters in tow, Meri and I rented our first space on Bloomfield Ave in Caldwell. Those early years were exhausting. I was a one man show in the clinic and Meri was running the back end of the business solo…but they were also exhilarating. I could finally practice PT the way I’d dreamed of when I first decided to leave my business career for PT.

Everyday, I learned all I could about my patients…not just their medical details but also about the life they dreamed of having if they didn’t have pain. Together we tackled physical and emotional obstacles to reclaim something they’d lost or discover a new place they never knew movement could take them.

I loved the freedom I had without quotas and wanted more patients to experience this type of journey.

Timeline of Iron Physical Therapy from 2011 to 2021

❤️ We believe people were as tired of the big box approach as we were.

⏱️ We believe that seeing only 1-2 patients per doctor would result in faster pain relief and better outcomes.

🏃‍♀️ We believe that athletes (or aspiring athletes) would respond positively to being treated by other athletes.

💪 We believe in the human potential to Get Better and Be Better.

Our community embraced this, and Iron grew. First a bigger Caldwell location, then a second clinic in Midland Park. Today, our team is larger, but our heart hasn’t changed.
