Blood Flow restriction training and Therapy

Ever wish you could get MORE gains by doing LESS? Well, you’re in luck because Iron offers a technique that helps you do just that.

Check out Dr. Mayes quick video highlighting all the ways Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) can enhance your recovery.

What is BFR?

Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) is a training technique where a specialized cuff restricts blood flow to a body part you want to strengthen during exercise.

how does Blood flow restriction Work?

  • Application: A cuff or band is placed around your arm or leg. It’s inflated to a level that restricts venous blood flow but allows arterial blood to still flow in. Exercises are then performed while wearing the cuff.

  • Effect: The partial restriction of blood flow forces muscles to work harder, which leads to increased muscle growth and strength gains with lighter weights.

  • Example: Let’s say you wanted the gains of lifting 100lbs, but due to pain or limitations that was not possible. With Blood Flow Restriction, you could achieve the benefit of using the heavy weight, but with only 20-40 lbs.

  • Safety: Proper monitoring by your PT is critical to ensure a safe and effective amount of pressure is used.

Who is Blood Flow Restriction for?

  • Injured or post-surgical patients with lifting restrictions

  • Individuals whose pain prevents them from lifting heavier weights

  • Athletes who want to get the most out of a workout without taxing their body as much
